Definition: Platter


An actual metal (or other rigid material) disk that is mounted inside a fixed-disk drive. Many drives consist of multiple platters mounted on the spindle to provide more data storage surfaces. Each platter may use one or both surfaces to store data.

Driver

A small software program that controls specific device. Every device has its own driver, for example printer and modem. The driver software is not for the end user else it tells the computer how to interact with the specific device.
