What is a corrupted file system and how does it relate to file recovery?

The "file system" is the term appointed to the logical units and software procedures that check and access the data stored in hard disk drive or storage medium.  Basically, the file system is the manager of your hard disk drive.  Different OS's have compatibility with different file systems.  Some OS's have their own proprietary file system.  The file system consists of several components such as: partition table, Master File Table (MFT), File Allocation Table (FAT), a boot sector, etc.  The MFT and FAT are the most significant of these components. These tables keep the records of all the files, folders, structure and their fragments.  The file system is corrupt when it becomes unreadable or overwritten. The corrupted file system becomes inaccessible and file recovery methods are required for data restoration.

Data Recovery Fact

Cluster

A cluster is defined as an allocation unit. It is a group of sectors. Most file systems group sectors together and handle the group as one unit. The cluster size (number of sectors per cluster) varies with the storage media and is fixed at time of format. At least one cluster is allocated to each file, regardless of the file's size, that is stored in the DOS environment.
