Ocotillo Wells is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California that lies along State Route 78 (SR78) three miles (5 km) west of the Imperial County line. The name is official since 1962 when it was adopted for federal use by the Board of Geographic Names. A federally-recognized variant name, Ocotillo , is easily confused with the Imperial County community of the same name . The community is defined as being at 163 feet (50 m) AMSL elevation. NAD27 latitude and longitude are listed at 33°08′40″N 116°08′00″W / 33.144444°N 116.133333°W / 33.144444; -116.133333 Coordinates : 33°08′40″N 116°08′00″W / 33.144444°N 116.133333°W / 33.144444; -116.133333 on the "Borrego Mountain, California" 7.5-minute quadrangle (map). Along State Route 78
A local landmark, Ocotillo Wells County Airport (FAA ID: L90), offers two dirt runways. Runway extents are marked by white paving blocks. The Los Puertecitos Historic Site lies along SR 78 about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of the community. [ 2 ] Gasoline is available at the Blu Inn (3 miles (4.8 km) east), in Borrego Springs (17 driving miles west) and Westmorland (18 driving miles east).
My Desert Rose, a traditional restaurant, is located at the intersection of Highway 78 and Split Mountain Road; this business is typically closed from June to October. This rest stop and restaurant burned down in the beginning of the 2008/2009 season.There are several other small businesses that operate next to the restaurant that sell off road accessories and rent ATVs ; these are also closed during the summer months. A short trip east, past (the) County Line, will take you to the Blu Inn, an RV park that includes a gas station, store and restaurant; This business is also typically closed during the summer months.
Approximately one mile south of Highway 78 along Split Mountain Road is the Iron Door and the Split Mountain Store. Both of these businesses are open part time during the summer to serve local residents and full time during the cooler months. The Split Mountain Store carries in stock a little bit of everything including groceries, beer and buggy and truck parts. The Iron Door is a small bar that has two pool tables and serves beer and wine along with some food such as candy bars and frozen pizza. This place keeps in tradition with several layers of decorated dollar bills stapled to the walls in addition to countless local artifacts.

Off-road recreation
The State of California, Department of Parks and Recreation operates Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area , consisting of lands which partly surround the community. This off road riding ( OHV ) area is part of the department's Southern Division, Ocotillo Wells District which is headquartered in Borrego Springs. [ 3 ]
Free camping is available at numerous locations along State Route 78. The most popular of these are Main Street, Holmes Camp, County Line Road, and Pole Line Road. Each of these areas have ample access to numerous trails that provide a challenge to riders of all skill levels. A wide variety of off road vehicles can be operated within the park. These range from dirt bikes and ATVs to sand buggys and modified trucks. Any vehicle with a licence plate or off road registration may be operated within the park.
Some of the highlights within the park are Blowsand Hill, which is visible from Highway 78 between Ranger Station Road and Main Street, Devils Slide, a small sand dune adjacent to a steep rocky hill, Shell Reef, Gas Dome and Pumpkin Patch.
